A League of their Own

  • What do you think happened at the end? Was it a genuine mistake?
  • In what ways were these women discriminated against because they were women? What did they have to worry about while playing baseball that men didn't have to worry about?
  • What was your favorite part of the movie?

I don't think it was a mistake, and i think Dottie actually dropped the ball on purpose. She wanted Kit to go on and have a successful career and be happy because she cared so much about baseball and doing well. Dottie did not care nearly as much and did not care that much if she lost.

They had to wear skirts and had to play in them. They had to take etiquette classes and they were told they weren't as exciting to watch. They were also yelled at by hating fans. They had to worry about playing during their period, getting mocked for being lady like and getting hurt by sliding in a skirt. They also worried about their husbands at war.

My favorite part was when the woman were at the bar because it showed how woman in baseball and woman in general at that time period had fun and cut loose. They had to be so up-tight and role models and intense on the field that they had no time to be real woman.

Date: 5/15/12
Headline:NY Times Top Story: Ashima Shiraishi
Summary:NY Times Top Story of today is a full length article about Asima Shiraishi who earlier this spring made Crown of Aragorn, 8B in Hueco. Only a few female have done 8B before but nobody as fast as Ashima (10). "From Monday through Friday, she and Poppo take a crosstown bus to the West Side, then a D train to Brooklyn Boulders in Gowanus, where she practices from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Another hour of travel, and they are back home in Chelsea..."
Significance: She is the youngest girl to send boulder problems at that difficulty level. She is a phenom and is gaining recognition as the most talented young climber in the game.
Questions: What does she do to train?

MIRACLE BLOG

  • Why was it such a big deal that they beat the Soviets? (2 REASONS)
We were in a Cold War with them at the time and they had only been beaten by one team.

  • What made Herb Brooks such a good coach? (be specific)
He motivated his players with unique tactics to make them try harder and make them want greatness more.
  • What did you like about the movie?
I liked everything about the movie but I especially liked how they portrayed the relationships between the players and Herb.

Race in Sports

Is there a racial division amongst sports? Is this a bad thing? Is racism present in sports?

I dont think there is a legitimate division amongst races in sports, but there are certain sports where certain races excel in better than others and are more prominent in than others. This will always happen because some races only stick to certain sports because it is the past-time of their ethnicity. Rather than being a bad thing or a good thing I think that it is just a way of life and the way things work. Racism is sometimes present in sports only because people get heated while watching games and love to find someone to put the blame on and direct their anger towards.

Currents Events 4/30/12

Title:

Dave Graham Sends Paint it Black (V15) and Numerous FA's

Date: 4/30/12
Summary:Dave Graham has continued to do what Dave Graham does, which is no surprise considering that he keeps doing it! After nine days of work, he's managed the third ascent of Paint it Black (V15) in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park. The problem was opened by Daniel Woods and recently repeated by Paul Robinson. Dave's also been engaged in a whirlwind of discovering and establishing new problems in the area. The day before Paint it Black he claimed the first ascent of The Grey (V14) calling it "one of the best climbs I have done in the United States." In the same area, called Wild Basin, he put upDead Meadow and Tetris (both V13), Achromatic and Bear Toss (both V13) in RMNP, and Pocket Frogs (V13) in Elkland. He established a new V12 "close to the crib" called The Skyward Sword (V12), nabbed a 2nd ascent of Carefully by Hand (V12) in Elkland, and added four more V11's to the region as well. This is likely a wrap-up to Dave's season in Colorado as he'll be leaving soon for a trip to Australia.
Significance: Dave has been on a rampage and is quickly becoming an absolute living legend among the world of climbing. He has done more first ascents than most climbers have done regular sends. No other climbers have the ability to dedicate their entire lives to FA's.
Questions: How many hours a week does Dave devote to FA's? How many hours does he usually put an FA down in?
